World Book Day 2026

Dear Parents and Carers,

To celebrate World Book Day, we will be holding a special event at school focused on books published within the last 70 years. This will also help us to celebrate our school turning 70 later this year!

On World Book Day, Thursday 5th March, children are invited to dress up as their favourite book character from a book published in the past 70 years. As part of the activity, pupils will also be asked to find out the year their chosen book was first published.

Using this information, we will be creating a display and timeline, showing how stories and characters have developed over time. This will help children develop their research skills, deepen their love of reading and see how books connect across generations.

Costumes do not need to be expensive or elaborate! Simple, homemade outfits are absolutely fine, and creativity is encouraged. If your child prefers not to dress up, they are still very welcome to take part by bringing in information about their chosen book.

Here are some examples:

● Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, published in 1964

● The Very Hungry Caterpillar, published in 1969

● Matilda, published in 1988

● The Northern Lights, published in 1995

● Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, published in 1997

● Dork Diaries, published in 2009

● The Boy at the Back of the Class, published in 2018

Thank you for your continued support in helping us make World Book Day a fun and meaningful celebration of reading. We look forward to seeing the wonderful characters and learning about many fantastic books.

Kind regards,

Mrs Horsburgh

Deputy Headteacher
